Mr. Faridul Hassan completed his Ph.D. in Power Electronics and Grid Integration from the National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar), India, in November 2025. His doctoral research primarily focused on the operation and control of grid-connected power electronic converters under non-ideal and weak-grid conditions. His work addressed challenges associated with EV charging under adverse grid conditions, converter synchronization, harmonic mitigation, power quality improvement, and reliable converter operation under challenging grid conditions. His research combined theoretical analysis and control development with extensive simulation and hardware-based experimental validation.
During his Ph.D., Mr. Hassan worked extensively with AC/DC and DC/DC power converters for applications involving renewable energy grid-integrations, battery energy storage systems, and EV charging. His research experience includes the development of advanced control and synchronization techniques, converter modelling, and real-time implementation using DSP and FPGA platforms. He also gained substantial experience in taking power-electronics concepts from theoretical development and simulation through hardware implementation and experimental validation. He was also an active member of the SERB-sponsored IMPRINT-IIC research project, titled “Feasible Coordinated Controlled Grid-Connected Photovoltaic-Sourced DC Fast Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles: Design, Development and Experimental Validation.” His involvement included the design of PCBs for various converter topologies using Altium, and the development and experimental implementation of laboratory hardware for a Single-Phase Grid-Connected PV System for Battery Energy Storage (BESS)/EV charging systems. This work further strengthened his experience in renewable-energy integration, EV charging infrastructure, grid-connected converters, and practical system-level implementation.
He is currently working as a Power Electronics Engineer (R&D) in Pune, India, focusing on high-power, high-efficiency, and high-power-density EV charging systems, including the hardware development of an 11 kW SiC/GaN-based onboard charger with multilevel PFC and DAB architectures (with 230 V AC to 400 V DC to 800 V DC). His responsibilities include converter and power-stage design, component selection, PCB and gate-driver development, hardware bring-up, testing, debugging, thermal/performance evaluation, optimization, and HDD/WCCA documentation. He is also involved in developing a 3.3 kW, high-frequency DAB converter (with 800 V/12 V, 275 A), including the design and development of high-frequency inductors and transformers to improve converter performance.
An important milestone in his research career was receiving the prestigious Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) PhD Industrial Exposure Fellowship in 2023. Through this fellowship, he worked for six months as a Visiting Researcher/Scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE), Freiburg, Germany. He worked with the Converter Unit team (Mr. Benjamin Stickan, Fraunhofer ISE, Germany) under the Power Electronics and Grid Integration Department. This international research experience provided exposure to an advanced R&D environment and strengthened his ability to work in multidisciplinary and international teams while connecting academic research with practical engineering challenges.
One of his significant practical contributions was the independent development of a 3.3 kW multi-input bidirectional onboard charger for rooftop PV integrated EV, for which he received external funding. The charger integrated a PV interface, Active Front End (AFE), DC-DC boost stage, and isolated Dual Active Half Bridge (DAHB) converter. He was responsible for the complete development cycle, including topology selection, component selection, electrical design, modelling, control development, PCB design and layout using Altium, gate-driver development, magnetic-component design, hardware assembly, testing, debugging, and experimental validation. His previous experience and knowledge helped him complete this project within four months (December 2024 to April 2025). This project provided him with strong practical experience in developing a complete power-converter prototype from concept to working hardware.
